St. Louis Cardinals fans struck by drunk driver outside of Citizens Bank Park
Educators Sandy Wacker and her good friend and colleague Cindy Grassi enjoyed following their favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals, from Missouri to different cities. On July 10, 2008 the teachers made their final trip together to see the Cards play the Phils. While crossing the street outside of Citizens Bank Park ("The Cit"), they were struck by an 18 year old self proclaimed "thug" who had a juvenile record and is now facing multiple charges as an adult. Cindy was removed from life support while surrounded by her family, in accordance with her wishes, and died immediately from her injuries. Sandy suffered tramatic brain injury and a shattered left leg, either of which could result in a permanent disability. Sandy faces a long road of recovery in the months to come.
When I heard this story on KYW News Radio the morning after the accident, I felt the need to do something - anything! So I began by researching, emailing and calling everyone I could think of - the Phils, the Cards, the St. Louis teacher association and news station that was covering the story, our local news - KYW, Channels 3, 6, and 10 and Fox. Not alot of response :( I did manage to get the Cards to send Sandy a "fan pack" of stuff to the hospital - I was happy about that. Words cannot adequately describe how compelled I felt to help Sandy, even though I had never met her I was drawn to reach out to her family. As I researched I learned that Sandy and Cindy were teachers - I was a teacher for many years. My Mom's name was Sandy. There were little things I had in common with these strangers who were the victims of a terrible tragedy in a place where my husband and I go to play and have fun. How many times have I walked across that same street to go to a Phillies game or a concert? It could have been any one of us struck down that day...
I decided to create a beautiful arrangement of blue green hydrangea to deliver to Sandy's bedside at the Hospital of University of PA. I also emailed her family with my offer to help in anyway and I was honored to assist them with getting their laundry done and buying some necessities at Walmart. We did not get to spend much time together, but I really enjoyed my short visit with Sandy's Mom Linda and sister Jennifer. They are lovely people and I think of the Wacker family each day and keep them in my prayers. Please visit www.prayersforsandy.com!
